There might be some spoilers here, and for this movie I use the word lightly, but be warned.

The basic plot:

Crack team of commando type soldiers get assigned a special mission. Cuba us their leader.

An anthropologist, who works for the CIA, is the special 1-time leader. Their mission is to extract her father, who is another scientist type.

They go into a bunker, which used to be a tomb. In the process, we learn that “sand can blast your skin off, so stay tight”.

The SAS type folks then find a person full of disease like boils. Of course, they treat the person and don’t think that this is odd. The person is a priest, still alive, who they don’t bother really containing.

We learn that SAS folks expect to find hot, naked ladies on levels of underground bunkers – which were previously found to have no hot naked ladies – and this is normal. Of course she eats him.

Back to our fearless heroes below. We learn that if you are SAS, and you see your unborn baby girl suddenly be a little girl while wondering the tombs underground corridors, you should follow her. It’s a great idea. Then we learn that if she turns into a demon, that’s reasonable (and she’s still…cute?) I suppose SAS deal with that daily. Then, if you hear her again, you should follow her again.

One could go on and on with the silly plot holes. If any of this sounds ridiculous to you, that’s because it is.

Watch this movie if you get it free, don’t value your time (or are really sick, and laying on the couch in a fever), or really want to laugh at how bad a movie can be.

It starts out fairly promising, with the two male leads and best friends (played by actual pretty boy twins) attending high school. They are so skinny (virtually anorexic) that it’s hard to take them seriously in some of the action sequences, but the dudes handle their acting requirements quite well. Anyway, we establish that Akira is good natured and Ryo is cold and creepy but get along well.

It’s not long before people start getting possessed by demons, which cause them to run amuck and kill others. The demons are CG and mostly look cool, with inventive creature designs. However, the way the story handles them is poor. Initially demons just run amock and kill humans, but then the movie starts treating them as a persecuted minority. When the military find a nest of demons and start gunning them down, we’re supposed to feel sorry for them.

Sorry for these bloodthirsty monsters… Nope, it doesn’t work. Then you have some sympathetic demons – people who can turn into monsters at will but try to live on as human beings. It’s never explained why some are evil and others are not. The demon thing ultimately feels schizophrenic and unsatisfying.

My next major complaint is the film’s message. After establishing that people are afraid of anything different from them, by hunting down and killing these good/bad demons, the movie devolves into a biting criticism of human nature. People start accusing each other of being demons without justification. Civil war erupts.

Innocents are treated extremely cruelly. I don’t disagree that paranoia would ensue in such a scenario, but the movie takes it too far. It just assumes that 99% of everyone would just take on a mob mentality and kill each other. Only a few of the main characters are portrayed with any integrity.

The movie makes sure to tell us in no uncertain terms that the demons could not win their war on humans unless people turned on each other. As a result, the last third of the film is extremely depressing. Not sad in a good way, just completely bleak and heavy-handed.

I haven’t mentioned Devilman himself up to now, and that’s because he’s hardly in the movie! I suspect that is because he is computer-generated and a greater presence would have strained the budget. He does look really cool when fully transformed.

In the end, I can only recommend this movie to diehard Devilman fans and fans of depressing Japanese movies. If you like the original Urotsukidoji, Devilman is quite similar in tone (but not as good). You can’t buy this film for the demon-fighting action because there just isn’t enough of it.

And yet the road to success is never easy, and one minute you think you know yourself and your choices, yet somehow, without any meaning to, you find yourself on a completely different path than the one you started out with.

Some of you have bosses that are easy to please. I have met and worked with bosses like Miranda Priestly, and it’s true, there are people like that in the world. Meryl Streep did a fantastic job of conveying such a tyrannical boss.

And Anne Hatheway is beautiful. Audrey Hepburn will never be replaced. But among the stars of today, Anne Hathaway is miles above stars like J. Lo, Britney Spears, and all those stars who think they are stars, but are nothing but crap.

Anne Hathaway is a much better role model than Britney Spears or J. Lo, Anne is definitely elegant, refined, and a lady. And we need more actresses who portray good manners, good breeding and good education.

Just because the way the ending is not a bang, doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. Every time when we make a right decision, there won’t be fireworks going off, or large celebrations to tell us we are right, and I think a lot of people are confused about that. They think that’s what the movies should always provide.

In real life, assistants cannot afford to dress like Anne did in the movies. But we are in a movie. So just enjoy it for what it is. A great movie that reminds us: choose the real important things in life vs. choose the frivolous things in life like fame, fashion and glamour, which fades in an instant.
